P-Vock's Music Box: FATALITY
Hello and welcome to P-Vock's Music Box.
I tend to talk about my personal favourites. I love sharing what I love. That being said, almost no one I know knows about some of the stupid games I've talked about, and even fewer have actually sat down and played them.
So, maybe it's about time I talked about something you've definitely heard of...
If it's not Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat is easily the most iconic fighting game franchise of all time. The tight gameplay has produced a wonderful competitive scene that continues to thrive. The lore has produced theories and discussions galore. The violence and gore was so intense that it almost singlehandedly saw video game rating systems come into play.
But how about the music? Oh yeah, it slaps!
Menu and character select themes don't get enough love, in my opinion. After that infinitely memorable gong that hits you in the face with more power than one of Bo Rai Cho's drunken slugs, you are met with an obnoxiously catchy beat that is equal parts memorable and funky. It also never loses that fun sense of anxious anticipation, which is absolutely perfect for a fight that could actually see someone's spine ripped out of their body. It's probably a good sign that the last thing you hear before you fight is a theme that you can't help but bob along to and immediately feel in the zone.
So once you get in the zone and hear that iconic voice yell "FIGHT!", what kind of music meets you?
Is this track for a fighting game, or for DOOM?
Either way, it absolutely rocks. That shredding on the guitar is edgier than one of Baraka's claws, and those screams so like someone either ripping someone's chest apart or having their own chest ripped apart. Those drums are booming and intense, immaculately echoing the high stakes of this outrageous tournament.
If I gave you the title of a track called "Slaughterhouse Jive" and asked you to imagine what that would sound like, I think you'd imagine something similar to this.
It's not the most iconic melody I have ever heard, but it absolutely fits the mood for a totally brutal murder fest of carnage and bloodshed.
Alright, you were probably thinking about it, so here you go.
I don't think I even have to say anything. I mentioned the iconic announcer of the games earlier, but that isn't the voice clip people associate with this stupid franchise. I bet when you realized I was talking about Mortal Kombat, you probably immediately heard this madman yelling "MORTAL KOMBAT" in your head, and for good reason.
This is probably one of the most iconic pieces of music ever composed, and I say that without a shred of irony or hyperbole. I think everyone knows this absolute jam. It's just so damn FUN.
Say what you will about the over-the-top nature of this series. At the end of the day, it's just plain fun. The aggressively edgy style has wormed its way into so many people's minds, and I think everyone can at least recognize Mortal Kombat. It's not for everyone, but it's a damn memorable time for those who do enjoy these ridiculous games.
I hope your weekend is nowhere near as bloody as these games, but I do hope it is as enjoyable and satisfying as delivering a good ole Fatality on one of your friends and staring them down with sheer cockiness as you separate their character from their soul.
Also, do check out the recent movie if you want some stupid fun with stupid violence on your screen.
Thank you as always for checking out my content, and I hope to catch you back here next time with another suggestion from my Music Box.
Stay Brutal!
