P-Vock's Music Box: Bad Game, Good Music

Hello and welcome to P-Vock's Music Box. It has been obnoxiously hot lately. When it gets hot, I get sweatier than a frog's armpit. When I get sweaty, I get real grumpy. So, in honour of me being so grumpy, let's talk about a game I despise in many ways.

I've mentioned a few times that I love that classic RPG Chrono Trigger. I truly believe it is a near-perfect piece of media and one of the first games I would say anyone with even a passing interest in this soul-sucking hobby should experience at least once. Lo and behold, Chrono Trigger got a sequel. This sequel, Chrono Cross, absolutely sucks. The gameplay is cumbersome, the story is nonsense, and the amount of disrespect it has for the game it precedes is shocking. BUT WORST OF ALL, it created a voluptuous bunny woman that confuses me and I'm scared will awaken something in me..

But hey, they brought back the same composer of Chrono Trigger, Yasunori Mitsuda, so the music still slaps.

Despite leading into a bad game, the opening music to Chrono Cross is honestly phenomenal. It has such a satisfying build-up and really gives the impression that the player is about to embark on an unforgettable journey (and it is such a frustratingly stupid journey that it definitely won't be forgotten, so points for accuracy). Regardless of my thoughts on the game, this opening is something I listen to quite frequently. It's the second-most replayed track for me . . .

So, Chrono Trigger has my favourite soundtrack of all time. I don't think there is a single dud in that OST and I listen to the entire thing frequently. But honestly, I enjoy this single piece more than a lot of that soundtrack.

The intrigue, the somber yet adventurous melody, the wonderful instrumentation. Everything about this piece is frankly perfect. This single track alone almost makes this entire disappointment of a video game worth it to me, I'm not even joking. I have put on ten-hour loops of this theme while working for the day, and not felt the need to change the music on more than one occasion. I love this track so much.

Now if only I could say the same about the game from which it hails.

Alright, that's enough doom and gloom from me, I'll let you go now. I hope your weekend is as incredible as the music in Chrono Cross and not as pure garbage as basically everything else in the game. Thank you so much, as always, for checking out my poorly-written nonsense and I'll catch you back here next time with another suggestion from my Music Box. Stay Brutal.

PS. That opening is too good to not include a bangin' cover. Enjoy!
