God is a game designer

existence is

God’s mmorpg

whereby

he allows us

to operate avatars

until our sub runs out

I enjoy playing World of Warcraft in my spare time. I've been playing pretty much since the game dropped in 2004. I could not, nor do I want to, count the hours sunk into WoW. WoW has given me online relationships, (all platonic) social interactions, and leisure I would never have had otherwise. It must be one of the best and most successful games ever made. The world is vast and immersive, and there is a near-infinite number of things to pursue in Azeroth.

Recently, I was playing and thinking about the similarities between existence and the Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) game format. It seems to me life is like an MMO. We are essentially role-playing our way through our journeys until our days end. Sometimes our quests are rather mundane, at other times exciting. We login in the morning, and logout at night to sleep.

If we are avatars and you prescribe to the idea (which I do) that God exists, this would de facto make Him a game designer. He created the universe in which we play and the laws that govern said universe. We are in our own RPG.

On a related note, a new expansion is coming up in WoW, called Dragonflight. If you love fantasy worlds and have entirely too much time on your hands, I recommend beginning your story in, or returning to Azeroth! I am always looking for new friends to play with and would love to meet some new peeps. Feel free to comment below if you are interested.
